Why 1-800 numbers do not work from Europe
Toll-free routing is country-specific. A German mobile network has no obligation to connect you to the U.S. toll-free gateway. The same applies from France, Spain, the UK, and most other countries.
What to do instead
Many U.S. banks and airlines publish an international direct-dial number — a regular +1 number that works from overseas. It is often printed on the back of your card or buried in a help page.
