To call a U.S. number from France, use +1 on a mobile, or 00 + 1 from a conventional landline, followed by the ten-digit number. Check whether your plan includes the destination. If a U.S. hotline does not connect, look for an official alternative, carrier Wi-Fi calling or a supported browser call.

Who calls the U.S. from France

Americans living in Paris and travellers across France regularly need U.S. banks, insurers and airlines — and French networks treat U.S. toll-free numbers as unreachable international destinations.

  • Paperwork a U.S. bank requests from customers living in France, such as updated tax-residency or FATCA documents
  • Disputing a charge on a U.S. credit card after a stay in Paris or Nice
  • Changing a Delta or United flight booked in the U.S.

Dialing the U.S. from France

The U.S. country code is 1. Every U.S. and Canadian number has a 3-digit area code and a 7-digit local number.

Local numbers in France vs. U.S. toll-free numbers

In France, 0800 and 0805 numbers are free numéros verts, while 089x numbers are premium-rate. A U.S. toll-free number belongs to a different numbering plan: dial +1 800 followed by the rest of the number. Dialing 0800 … reaches a French line, not the U.S. company.

If a U.S. toll-free number fails from France

International access depends on the originating carrier and destination. A U.S. toll-free designation does not guarantee that a foreign-network call connects or is free. Check the company's contact page and the conditions of providers such as Orange, SFR, Bouygues Telecom and Free.

Some French forfaits include calls to ordinary U.S. and Canadian numbers — Free Mobile's main plan is a well-known example. Such inclusions usually don't cover U.S. toll-free numbers, so check the destination list of your forfait first.

Do not change the toll-free prefix to another one or assume that an error means the business is closed. Your current plan may include an ordinary U.S. number; check before paying for an additional service.

U.S. bank contacts: check the product and call type

Confirm the contact for your specific product on the bank's official website or your card. A collect reference requires an operator and acceptance of charges; PayCall cannot arrange a collect call. Follow the detailed bank guide before dialing.

Frequently asked questions

Is a French numéro vert the same as a U.S. 1-800 number?

No. A numéro vert (0800 or 0805) is free inside France only. A U.S. 1-800 number needs +1 in front and is not free from a French line.

Can I call a U.S. 1-800 number from France?

Access depends on your carrier and the hotline. Use +1 and the full number, check an official international alternative or your carrier's Wi-Fi calling, or use a supported browser call. A PayCall call costs $0.39/min of connected time; it is not free.

What is the dialing code for the USA from France?

+1 from a mobile, or 00 1 from a landline, followed by the 10-digit U.S. number.

Can I call a U.S. hotline with WhatsApp?

No. WhatsApp only calls other WhatsApp users, not landlines or customer service numbers.

What time should I call U.S. customer service?

France is 6 hours ahead of New York (Eastern Time) and 9 hours ahead of Los Angeles (Pacific Time) for most of the year. Call U.S. hotlines from about 2 p.m. French time.
