To call a U.S. number from the Netherlands, use +1 on a mobile, or 00 + 1 from a conventional landline, followed by the ten-digit number. Check whether your plan includes the destination. If a U.S. hotline does not connect, look for an official alternative, carrier Wi-Fi calling or a supported browser call.

Who calls the U.S. from the Netherlands

Amsterdam and Rotterdam host a large international workforce with U.S. bank accounts, credit cards and retirement plans that still route support through 1-800 numbers.

  • IRS and U.S. bank questions for American entrepreneurs who moved under the Dutch-American Friendship Treaty (DAFT)
  • Capital One or Charles Schwab account questions from Amsterdam or Rotterdam
  • Changing a transatlantic flight booked with a U.S. airline

Dialing the U.S. from the Netherlands

Local numbers in the Netherlands vs. U.S. toll-free numbers

Dutch free numbers start with 0800, while 0900, 0906 and 0909 numbers are charged per minute. A U.S. toll-free number isn't part of the Dutch numbering plan: dial +1 and the ten digits, without a leading 0.

If a U.S. toll-free number fails from the Netherlands

International access depends on the originating carrier and destination. A U.S. toll-free designation does not guarantee that a foreign-network call connects or is free. Check the company's contact page and the conditions of providers such as KPN, Vodafone and Odido.

Bundles from KPN, Vodafone and Odido usually cover calls within the Netherlands and the EU; calls to the United States are typically charged per minute. Check your bundle before a long call.

Do not change the toll-free prefix to another one or assume that an error means the business is closed. Your current plan may include an ordinary U.S. number; check before paying for an additional service.
