To call a U.S. number from Spain, use +1 on a mobile, or 00 + 1 from a conventional landline, followed by the ten-digit number. Check whether your plan includes the destination. If a U.S. hotline does not connect, look for an official alternative, carrier Wi-Fi calling or a supported browser call.

Who calls the U.S. from Spain
Spain is a top destination for U.S. retirees, digital nomads and students. Most of them still need U.S. banks, Medicare-related insurers and the IRS — all of which publish 1-800 numbers.
- Social Security or IRS questions for U.S. retirees living in Málaga, Alicante or Valencia
- Medicare enrollment questions — Medicare generally doesn't pay for care in Spain, so retirees call about coverage rather than claims
- Fidelity or Wells Fargo questions about a U.S. retirement or checking account
Dialing the U.S. from Spain
The U.S. country code is 1. Every U.S. and Canadian number has a 3-digit area code and a 7-digit local number.
| Calling from | What to dial | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Mobile phone | +1 + area code + number | +1 302 594 8200 |
| Landline | 00 1 + area code + number | 00 1 302 594 8200 |
| Browser (PayCall) | Area code + number | (302) 594-8200 or 1-800 numbers |
Local numbers in Spain vs. U.S. toll-free numbers
Spanish free numbers start with 900 or 800, and 901 and 902 numbers are charged. Because a U.S. toll-free number can also begin with 800, the +1 matters: 800 … dialed on its own reaches a Spanish line, +1 800 … the U.S. company.
If a U.S. toll-free number fails from Spain
International access depends on the originating carrier and destination. A U.S. toll-free designation does not guarantee that a foreign-network call connects or is free. Check the company's contact page and the conditions of providers such as Movistar, Vodafone, Orange and DIGI.
Spanish operators usually charge calls to the United States separately or through an international bono. Check whether your tarifa includes the U.S. before a long call on hold.
Do not change the toll-free prefix to another one or assume that an error means the business is closed. Your current plan may include an ordinary U.S. number; check before paying for an additional service.
Your options compared
| Option | 1-800 numbers | Typical cost | What you need |
|---|---|---|---|
| Roaming or local SIM | Depends on carrier and destination | Your plan's rate | A phone plan supporting the destination |
| International direct-dial number | Not needed | International rate of your plan | The company's +1 international number |
| Wi-Fi calling on your phone | Depends on carrier and plan | Your home carrier's terms | Supported device, plan and destination |
| PayCall in your browser | Supported U.S. destinations | $0.39/min connected; $0.09/min with Hold for me active | Internet, microphone and prepaid credits |
U.S. bank contacts: check the product and call type
Confirm the contact for your specific product on the bank's official website or your card. A collect reference requires an operator and acceptance of charges; PayCall cannot arrange a collect call. Follow the detailed bank guide before dialing.
