Services that wait on hold for you: which work from abroad?

PayCall Hold for me, No Sitting On Hold, HumanLine and While compared: how they reach you, where they work and what they cost when you call a U.S. hotline from abroad.

Hold for me · microphone off
$0.09per minute
Speaking · microphone on
$0.39per minute

Several services now sit in a phone queue for you and connect you when a person answers: No Sitting On Hold, HumanLine and While. PayCall's Hold for me works differently: you stay in the call yourself with your microphone off, and the waiting costs $0.09/min. In the U.S. the callback services mostly differ on price. Abroad, two questions matter more: can the service reach you without roaming on your phone, and is it offered where you are? PayCall runs in your browser in any country, dials U.S. and Canadian numbers including 1-800 lines, and charges $0.09/min on hold and $0.39/min once you talk.

What changes when you call from abroad

  • A callback to your phone is a call to a foreign mobile. Depending on the service and your plan, it may not be supported or may count as international roaming. A call that stays in your browser avoids that.
  • U.S. 1-800 numbers often don't connect from foreign phones. A service has to place the call from the U.S. network for those lines to work.
  • Some services are only offered in the United States. No Sitting On Hold's terms say so; HumanLine doesn't say which countries it serves.
  • Subscriptions with a monthly call allowance suit frequent callers. For a few hotline calls a year, pay-as-you-go is usually simpler.

What one typical call costs

A call to a U.S. bank or airline with 30 minutes on hold and 10 minutes talking costs $6.60 with PayCall's Hold for me. Billed at No Sitting On Hold's $2.49 per hour, the same 40 minutes would cost about $1.66, and HumanLine's free plan covers 3 calls a month with up to 30 minutes on hold.

If you live in the U.S. and call from a U.S. phone, those services are cheaper per call. PayCall is built for the case they don't clearly cover: you're abroad, the 1-800 line won't connect, and you want to stay in one call without a callback to your foreign number.

Which one should you use?

  • You're in the U.S. with a U.S. phone and call hotlines often: a dedicated hold service such as No Sitting On Hold or HumanLine is likely cheaper.
  • You want an AI to navigate the menu and read out your account details for you: HumanLine does this. With PayCall you go through the menu yourself and never hand account details to an assistant.
  • You're abroad and need a U.S. bank, airline, insurer or government line a few times a year: PayCall works in the browser in any country, calls 1-800 numbers, and charges $0.09/min while your microphone is off. Unanswered calls are free.
