Bank card blocked abroad
Card blocked abroad? How to reach your U.S. bank's fraud department
Call the number your bank lists for customers outside the U.S. (table below) or the toll-free number on the back of your card, and confirm the flagged transactions. The block is usually lifted on the same call. If the 1-800 number won't connect from your phone, call it from your browser with PayCall: the call goes out from the U.S. network.
Can someone else pay for me if my card is blocked?
Yes. You create a pay link and send it by WhatsApp or SMS, for example. The other person pays by card without an account, and the credit or Unlimited Calling Pass goes to your PayCall account. The link works for 24 hours and can be paid once.
Card blocked? Let someone else payFirst, check your banking app
Many banks send a text, email or app alert when they block a card for suspected fraud. If you can confirm the transaction or unlock the card in the app, you may not need to call at all.
Fraud and card numbers of major U.S. banks
Use the number for your card type. For anything else, the number on the back of your card is always the right one.

“Listed as collect” means the bank accepts the charges if you go through an operator. It is still a normal U.S. number: if you dial it directly, you pay for the call yourself.
What to do, step by step
Have this ready
Your card or its last four digits, the name and address on the account, and the transactions you want to confirm. Never give your full PIN or online banking password; banks don't ask for them.
Call the right number
Use the table above or the number on the back of your card. Check the hours: some fraud lines are open around the clock, others only during U.S. Eastern Time business hours.
Confirm or report
Tell the agent which recent charges are yours. If your card is lost or stolen, it is closed and a new card with a new number is sent; some banks can ship it to where you are staying.
Ask about verification
If the bank wants to text a code to a U.S. number you can't reach right now, ask for another way, such as the banking app, email or security questions.
Why the 1-800 number on your card often fails abroad
U.S. toll-free numbers are free only inside the U.S. and Canada. Many foreign carriers don't connect them at all, and those that do usually charge an international rate. That is why banks publish a separate +1 number for callers abroad.
Your options from abroad
| Option | Cost | Good to know |
|---|---|---|
| Collect call through an operator | Free for you | Needs an operator or access code in your country; often not possible from a mobile phone. |
| Your mobile phone, dialing directly | International or roaming rates | Long holds get expensive, and toll-free numbers may not connect. |
| Calling app with prepaid credit | Low per-minute rates | Some plans exclude toll-free numbers; check that your app can reach 1-800 lines. |
| Unlimited Calling Pass | $7.90 for 3 hours (calls end when the pass ends) | Unlimited calls for 3 hours from purchase |
| PayCall in your browser | $0.09/min on hold, $0.39/min talking, or $14.90 for 24 hours of unlimited calls | No app or SIM. The call goes out from the U.S. network, so toll-free numbers usually connect. Keypad for phone menus. |
Long hold? Pay one fixed price
A long wait or several calls can make costs hard to predict. Choose a fixed-price Unlimited Calling Pass for 3 hours ($7.90), 24 hours ($14.90) or 3 days ($24.90). One call at a time, up to 3 hours each. The pass starts when paid, or after an active pass ends, and does not renew. With the 3-hour pass, a call ends when the pass expires. Call refunds apply to pay-per-minute calls, not pass calls.
Questions
Can someone else pay for me if my card is blocked?
Yes. You create a pay link and send it by WhatsApp or SMS, for example. The other person pays by card without an account, and the credit or Unlimited Calling Pass goes to your PayCall account. The link works for 24 hours and can be paid once.
Why was my card blocked even though I told my bank I was traveling?
Banks block a card when a payment looks unusual, for example a new country, a large amount or several attempts in a row. A travel notice can help, but it doesn't switch fraud checks off, and several large issuers no longer ask for one.
Can I call my bank collect from abroad?
Many banks accept collect calls on their abroad number (marked “listed as collect” in the table). You need an operator or an access code in your country, which is often not available on mobile phones.
Does the 1-800 number on my card work from abroad?
Often not from a foreign phone. It usually works when the call is placed from the U.S. network, for example with PayCall in your browser.
What if the verification code is sent to my U.S. phone number?
Ask the agent for another method, such as the banking app, email or security questions. PayCall makes voice calls only and can't receive text messages.
How long does it take to unblock my card?
If you confirm the flagged transactions, the block is usually lifted during the call. A card reported lost or stolen is closed and replaced with a new number.
Is it safe to call my bank through PayCall?
PayCall connects an ordinary phone call and doesn't record, transcribe or analyze it. Only call numbers from your card, your statement or the bank's official website, like the ones in the table.
Call your bank now
Enter the number from the table or from the back of your card. Unanswered calls are free.
